JACK DAVIS with DEWITT JONES and RIK COOKE
AT THE HUI HO'OLANA RETREAT CENTER
MOLOKAI, HAWAII
THE OVERVIEW
This year Jack Davis, renowned author and educator, with Hawaii “Kama’aina” (locals) Dewitt Jones and Rik Cooke, will once again be teaching a digital photography and Photoshop workshop at the Hui Ho’olana Center in Molokai, Hawaii. Whether you are a working professional or a dedicated amateur, you will be encouraged to learn with the freshness and enthusiasm of a beginner, as together we explore both our photographic process’ and our creative process’. We’ll also dig into how the latest Photoshop (and Lightroom, if that is your workflow) can be used as THE incredible tool to not only complement, but also extend, and automate, both your creativity as well as your production.
This is a week of exploring ways to better shoot from the heart - how to find the story that we may have never had the time, environment, opportunity, or permission to tell with our photography, our art. And how Photoshop (and some incredible third-party plugins) can give you creative options that you may never have had the opportunity to dive into before. The event is geared to help us slow down enough to allow our eye to play (through the lens) with the world around us - especially this incredibly beautiful world of Molokai. There will also be plenty of time and instruction for working with Photoshop - and Lightroom, if that is your workflow - (on your lap top, if you choose to follow along) so that students can get invaluable insights and techniques focused on helping them translate, massage, craft, and fine-tune their “captures” into that personal story that is in their heart, and that can be shared with others.
THE DETAILS
This workshop is about exploring the art in our lives and within our selves. On our many field trip/shoots, we will also provide essential insights and assistance on the technical side of photography for us who would like to take advantage of some truly gifted National Geographic alumni - our own Dewitt Jones and Rik Cooke. We’ll all also be taking part in evening slide shows after incredible dinners (with a chance to recline with a glass of wine while unwinding from the day) that cover both these two areas of inspiration and information. This week is dedicated to sharpening the eye, expanding the mind and opening the heart.
This year, as last time, we'll be separating the days into either all photographing - one guided field trip out into the island, and one casual one around the Hui - (it's gardens, grounds and pool), the local palm grove, beaches or ? OR a day of all Photoshop instruction (9am to 12pm so you still have time to shoot in the morning light, then a two hour lunch, siesta, swim, massage, etc., then 2pm to 6pm more instruction - with more time to shoot around sunset). As we found a few years back, doing both a photo field trip and Photoshop instruction in the same day was too much left-brain / right-brain cross-pollination! This separation should make both the shooting and the Photoshoping more focused and relaxed! And attendees can also plan on some dedicated one-on-one Q&A time with Jack, if they would like, in addition to all the field-trip, demonstration and lab time we'll have together.

THE LOCATION
The workshop will be held at Hui Ho’olana on lands that have been in Rik’s family since the turn of the century. The main Lodge is secluded on 100 acres, surrounded by a spectacular view of the western half of Molokai, the Pacific Ocean and distant islands. A rock swimming pool and organic garden complement the grounds. Watching rainbows dance across the island or the sun sink behind Diamond Head from the front porch In a setting out of Old Hawaii is truly an unforgettable experience.
Molokai is the birthplace of the hula, the sacred island where the Hawaiians sent their kahunas for training. The powerful spirit of this place evokes a strong connection to the land itself and you soon discover that “Mother Molokai” is one of our teachers. Through our connection with nature in this ancient and sacred place, we will nurture our own spirits as we focus ourselves before we focus our cameras. In the quiet of our time together, Molokai gives us gifts of renewal and a reverence for our selves and the world we share.
